Day at Huntington Library

Spent yesterday at the Huntington Library with my grandparents. Here’s some pictures:

Inspiration

I’ve found myself locked into a “safety net” mindset. Last few shoots, I wanted to do experiment and move outside my comfort zone. Unfortunately, as soon as the shoots started my brain went into autopilot. Instead getting the “safety” shots first then moving into experiment, I stayed in safe mode. I’ve trained myself so well to ensure I can always delivery “good enough” images, it’s become second nature.

Part of this is due to my lack of inspiration. Technically speaking, I am quite proficient in photography. Creatively, I’m quite shitty. Ok fine, really shitty. So… I have to go back to the basics yet again. To go back to what made me dive into photography head first years before. Expect to see some improvements soon. :)

Another Reason NOT to Use h.264

Another interesting article from OSNews.com today with regards to h.264: http://www.osnews.com/story/23236/Why_Our_Civilization_s_Video_Art_and_Culture_is_Threatened_by_the_MPEG-LA

As with previous posts, the article written by the talented and knowledgeable writers at OSNews.com does a MUCH better job at explaining things than I can.

As explained before, you’re only allowed to use the h.264 codec for “personal and non-commercial” uses without paying royalties to MPEG-LA and/or other patent holders. Unfortunately, most HD cameras and camcorders shoot in h.264 format. So just by using these cameras, you’re not allowed to use the footage for anything other than personal and “non-commercial” use. The author shows proof of this from this Canon 5D Mark II manual which I will show from my own manual here:

MPEG-4 licensing info from my 5D Mark II instruction manual. H.264 is in Part 10 of the MPEG-4 specification (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC). Sorry for the shitty quality, this was taken on my phone.

A link to the PDF version of the 5D Mark II’s instruction manual is provided in the article.

The reason the word non-commercial is in quotes is the definition that MPEG-LA gives for what it considers to be non-commercial. According to their definition, non-commercial means that the video can’t be displayed on, with, by, anything that bring “income” to the owners, makers, and distributors of the video. What this means is that if you’re running a site supported by ads, you’re not allowed to use the video that is shot in, encoded, and/or distributed in h.264 without paying royalties to MPEG-LA. Keep in mind that Youtube uses the open source x264 encoder for encoding h.264 content and has ads on the site. The former point will be discussed later. According to the definition of non-commercial use, Youtube needs to pay royalties. MPEG-LA has so far been using what the article calls common sense and have extended the royalty free use of h.264 for online broadcasting.

Now assuming you’re going to use h.264 to deliver content to your friends and family for purely personal use (e.g. a video of Fido running into a wall). And you post the video to Youtube or Vimeo (which also uses the x264 encoder), you and Youtube/Vimeo needs to pay royalties. Why?! The reason is the x264 encoder devs didn’t pay to license the technology. For that reason, it is not considered an “authorized” encoder. I don’t feel comfortable to go any further. As stated in previous posts, I haven’t done enough research, fact checking, etc. to back up anything further. So read the article. I don’t want to be spreading the wrong info.

EDIT: Most of the articles I link to with regards to this issue is from OSNews.com. Here is an article about their “bias”: http://www.osnews.com/story/23235/A_Statement_Regarding_OSNews_Bias

Personal Project – Princess Shoot

UPDATE: Re-edited some of the pictures. Updated the gallery accordingly.

Finally have the galleries up for everyone to see. After the initial post about the shoot on March 29th (here), I found out that I lost more than expected. Total amount of equipment lost or damaged is up to ~$220. Quite a costly shoot. While processing the pictures, I found another problem. The lens I was using for the majority of the shots was suffering from strong back focusing (or front I don’t remember). Had to throw out a good number of the pictures because of this. Fortunately, the group pictures were shot at small apertures. They were all slightly soft though. Needless to say, this shoot was full of problems from the very start. Nothing went according to plan and it seems the photo gods were out to get me that day. Oh well, definitely not my best work. Mediocre at best. I did learn a lot from this shoot though and got a burst of ideas afterward for other shoots.

Without further delay, here are the galleries:

Random Shots – 4/19/10

It’s been awhile since I updated. Been working on school work and started to process the pictures from the Princess shoot. I’ll have those done by the end of the week. It’s turning out to be a bigger bitch than first imagined but I’m getting on it. I promised an article awhile back but I decided not to write it up. I don’t feel I have sufficient knowledge on the topic. Instead, I’ve changed the topic to something I feel more comfortable with. That will come by the end of the week as well. Assuming I don’t slack off which as everyone knows will most definitely happen :p

On a different note, I’ve really been enjoying the B&N Nook. Already read well over 1000 pages. Read the book Deception Point by Dan Brown on it from beginning to end without any complaints. Finished the first two books in Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Collection. Don’t have a single complaint about the E-Ink display. Battery life is great, its form factor is perfect, and the features are as close to complete as you’ll expect. Loving it.

Now for some pictures:

Testing a New Lens

Yesterday, I went to Canon to pick up my lens (it needed calibration). While waiting for the rep to retrieve my lens, the rep and someone else came out to greet me. He introduced himself and asked me a few questions which I found odd (“How long have you been a CPS member, etc). He asked if I shot weddings and as you all know I have a passion for wedding photography. He then asked in a hushed voice if I would be interested in a new lens that Canon was developing specifically for wedding photographers! Of course I said HELL YEAH! He told me to go meet him at the security doors near the broadcast equipment is dropped off for repair. I can’t go into much after what happened, they made me sign a NDA. But I could give everyone here a preview… though it’s not much. Much of the information is stripped out so you’ll just have to stare at it and wonder ;)

Secret Lens ;)

Princess in the Woods

The title of this post is the name I gave to the personal project I was working on this Spring Break. The shoot was scheduled for Friday and involved a total of 3 assistants (John, Perry, and Ron) and 3 models (Tanya Manifold, Torrie Clontz, and Aoni Ma). The shoot started at 2pm and ended at around 10pm. It was a long but fun day. The purpose of this project was to test the ability to push my gear to the absolute max. The goal was to make an image that would require more gear than I actually had. The final setup required that I made each one of my flashes act as if it were 3 separate flash guns. A challenge to say the least. For the shoot, I ended up using a 580ex and two 430ex. The shoot would be “easy” to pull off if I had another $5000 to $10000 worth of lighting equipment and other support. I’m a little crazy though so this was a nice challenge for me.

My assistant, Perry, drew up this diagram of the very first lighting setup I came up with: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/322709/Perry_Diagram.JPG You’ll notice how he drew his own face in the diagram and the nickname that I now have :p

Problems started almost immediately after we arrived on location. Pretty much everything that could go wrong, went wrong. Right off the bat, two of the models had to leave early. Originally, I had selected two locations for the shoot. The first location was the ideal but the second location gave me more control of the light. With that in mind, I made the decision to shoot at the second location first and if time allowed we would move to the first location. Before putting down the first light, I had problems finding the cables for the Pocket Wizards (PWs). Ended up spending about 5 to 8 mins searching for the stupid cable. After that, we hooked up the first light (a 580ex2), setup the laptop for tethered shooting, and started making some frames.

Proceeded to the next two “lights”. The word “lights” is in quotes because I was making the lone 580ex2 act as two separate lights. I wanted to try and simplify things by throwing in a 430ex instead of making the 580ex2 act as two lights. This meant triggering both flashes with one PW (I only have two because I’m poor). Hooked up the cables from the PW to the two flashes and gave it a test. *click* …. *click* … nothing. No blinding pops from the flashes. Checked the cables and connectors to make sure everything is plugged in tightly. Pushed the test button again *click* … *click* … *click* *CLICK* *CLICK* *CLICK* “GAH!!!” Unplugged all the cables and connectors and plugged them back in again. Turned the flashes off and on. Nothing. Turned out it was the cable connecting to the adapter that was causing the problem. That wasn’t the end of it though. While trying to plug in all the cables, the light stand fell over taking with it the flash and PW which would of been fine… except we lost the connector in the tall grass. Spent another 5 mins looking through the grass for the connector. Eventually found it and got everything hooked up properly again. The cable wasn’t long enough for the setup I wanted. Ended up throwing out the 430ex and using just the 580 acting as two lights. So much for simplicity. This all took about 30 to 45 mins and my three princesses waited patiently.

Finally got the location lit, time to light the models! I thought that would be the easiest part… hahahahahah! Oooooohhh boy was I wrong. I didn’t take into account of the light modifiers sucking the very life out of the flash guns. With the 580 and 430 at full power, I was still underexposing the models by almost a full stop (depending on where I had them positioned). As if the photo gods didn’t think that was bad enough for me, the wind decided to knock over the light stand with the 580. Killing my beloved Lastolite All-in-one umbrella, breaking its ribs and bending its arms. I grabbed the gaffer tape and performed emergency surgery on the poor thing. Luckily, I was able to save it and the show could go on. Not satisfied with what it had done, the wind decided to strike again. This time it took down my other light stand with the 430 and Westcott white satin umbrella (which was already damaged and repaired from a previous shoot), I caught it just as it was about to hit the ground. Unfortunately, the hot shoe adapter couldn’t handle the force and broke in half. Again gaffer tape was used to perform emergency surgery on the adapter.

Angered by my awesome surgery skills that saved my gear, the photo gods struck again. This time taking down my laptop and causing the camera to go trigger happy. Luckily the tank that is my Thinkpad weathered the attack without skipping a beat. I had to reset the camera and EOS Utility though. Not a big deal. Still not satisfied, the photo gods decided to attack my flash triggering system. I’m used to the triggering system failing so that didn’t phase me in the slightest.

Long story short, the rest of the shoot involved minor problems popping up like wild fires every few mins with my crew and I working frantically to put them out and continue on. Eventually, the on-location shoot had to be cut short. The two models that had to leave early were going to run late. We broke down and went off to grab some gourmet grub from this fancy food joint known as In-N-Out Burger :p

Our dinner.

After dinner, we moved to the studio to continue the shoot. Without going into much details, the shoot involved the use of a fog machine which didn’t work out quite how I expected. Not to mention we were all on the edge of food coma. With John being the only exception. He couldn’t eat with us because of Lent. Ended up calling it a day after a little over an hour of shooting. We still had a little energy to fool around and decided to take some goofy pics for our Facebook profiles :D

Overall, a great day. Didn’t get the image I had set out for. I always imagine an image in my mind that I could never quite get into print. It annoys the hell out of me but that’s fine. Its all part of the learning process and what makes photography so much fun. I set out to create an image with the limited equipment at my disposal. To others it was a crazy idea and that is partly true. With this experience under my belt, I now have the knowledge to pull this off next time. During the creation of this post, I told my assistants that I would spend the money I have saved up for more lighting gear in order to get this image right. I take that back now. This is a challenge and that’s what makes it fun. I will do this again when time allows. And I will do it with the limited equipment available during this shoot (although, I will definitely replace the broken gear with new equivalents). I know its possible to pull this off and that is exactly what will happen!

Expect behind the scenes, goofy pics, and the final images to be posted soon. Check back soon! And thanks again to everyone who helped. I couldn’t have pulled it off without your help.
