Pop Up Flash

Ah, the built-in flash. Everyone knows it sucks and should be avoided when possible. Being such a small light source means that the shadows are harsh and also being located right above the lens axis (most of the time) means red eye. As a light source, it just plain sucks. But sometimes you just don’t have a choice. The ambient light is virtually non-existant, you know f/0.1 @ ISO 25600.

There are ways to make it better… Both of the pictures below was taken with my 40D and pop up flash.

This shot was taken with the pop up flash on the 40D. Straight flash nothing done.

Notice the hard and well defined shadows. Not a very pleasing photo.

Notice the shadows now. They’ve been softened and the overall image is greatly improved. I used a piece of toilet paper folded over on itself and put it directly over the flash. By doing this, the toilet paper helps soften the light coming from the flash. Regular paper works too but not as well.

Give it try if you find yourself needing to use the pop up flash but don’t want the pop up flash look. It’ll still look like straight flash but it’ll be more “kind” =D. Happy shooting!

A Picture A Day – 04/24/09

You should of noticed now that I no longer put what I shot the pic with. I’ve left the EXIF data intact so you can just check that if you’re interested in what settings I used, etc.

Birds…

So I found out I screwed up on the bird names again… I really suck at identifying birds. Anyway, all the pics of the supposed “killdeers” are actually American Avocets. Too lazy to go through all the posts and change the mistake so I’m making it in this post.
